Deepen Your Days of Awe Experience on Tuesdays in Elul

article_image_full

Are you awake? Are you prepared? The month of Elul that precedes the Days of Awe is both a gift and an opportunity. We each enter the season with our own personal thoughts and emotions. Some of us are called by our sensory memories (melodies from years past, for example); some by the sense of community; some by the hope we’ll be moved and inspired to do our own cheshbon haNefesh (accounting of our soul) and use this opportunity to move closer to the version of ourselves we hope to be.

Join BCC member Jeff Bernhardt and the BCC clergy for preparation and study for the Days of Awe on four Tuesday nights from August 11 thru September 1.

As exciting bonuses, Jeff Bernhardt’s new book and the new Reform Machzor (our new prayer book for the Days of Awe) will be available for purchase at each session (though no purchase required). All sessions are at BCC from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.

August 11 with Jeff Bernhardt Based on his new book For Every Season: An Introspective Guide to Renewing Ourselves During the Days of Awe and Throughout the Jewish Year, Jeff will help us explore and share how we can each take advantage of this gift of the Jewish holiday cycle.

August 18 with Rabbi Heather Miller Rabbi Miller will begin an exploration with us of our exciting new machzor entitled Mishkan Hanefesh (“Sanctuary of the Soul”), which we will use for the first time this year. We sampled a few of its pages last year.

August 25 with Rabbi Lisa Edwards Rabbi Edwards will continue our exploration of Mishkan Hanefesh, and the ways this prayer book might lead us to new insights into our tradition while we travel our own spiritual paths.

September 1 with Cantor Juval Porat and Jeanelle LaMance, “Music of Heaven” Like our new machzor, the music we make and enjoy during our Days of Awe experience can underscore the central value of Teshuvah, a new direction and a return to God. Join Cantor Juval and pianist Jeanelle LaMance as we explore Shirei Mishkan Hanefesh, the compendium of new musical compositions developed by the American Conference of Cantors, who give voice to new liturgy and expand upon familiar themes that have remained with us from generation to generation.

September 8 with author and BCC Member, Maggie Anton Parkhurst for “How the Talmudic rabbis reinvented Rosh Hashanah & Yom Kippur after Rome destroyed the Temple in Jerusalem.”   Maggie will cover new rituals that aren’t in the Torah, some based on Zoroastrian beliefs.  Maggie Anton is the award-winning author of historical fiction series “Rashi’s Daughters” and “Rav Hisda’s Daughter.” She is a Talmud scholar, with expertise in Jewish women’s history. Anton speaks to Jewish organizations all over the country about the research behind her novels. Read more about Maggie at www.maggieanton.com
