Women’s Havurah: Walking Tour of Historic Downtown Los Angeles
Downtown Los Angeles is a trove of architectural treasures. The self-guided walking tour on these pages provides a sampling of Los Angeles’ best downtown historic architecture, from the Beaux Arts magnificence of the Biltmore Hotel to the Art Deco sophistication of the Southern California Edison Building and the Victorian ebullience of the Bradbury Building and Angel’s Flight.
On Sunday, May 19th, the Women’s Havurah is up for another great activity, a tour of historic Downtown Los Angeles (plus stopping for lunch). We’ll follow the L.A. Conservancy Walking Tour Map.
“I’ve done this three times and find it illuminating,” says Ronnie Wexler, who is organizing the tour. “To see parts of Downtown Los Angeles by foot has a magical quality to it. The Women’s Havurah did this in December of 2011 and I would like to resurrect this often overlooked part of our Los Angeles history. For those of you that are photo-bugs, this offers an unparalleled opportunity for capturing architecture of hand-crafted terra-cotta archways, exuberant carvings, hand-crafted wood panels, mountains of marble, while clashing with the modern skyline of Downtown Los Angeles. The act of walking through downtown, gives a sense of awe and humbleness to our hectic day-to-day travails. This is one of my most favorite things to do. I invite those of you that have a bit of adventuresome spirit to join me, for what I promise to be a day to remember.”
