Executive Director – Beth Chayim Chadashim, LosAngeles, CA

Beth Chayim Chadashim (BCC, House of New Life) is a Jewish reform synagogue, which provides a comfortable and engaging place to explore and celebrate Jewish faith and culture. Founded in 1972 as the world’s first synagogue with an outreach to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, BCC’s membership today is exceptionally diverse, not just in orientation, but also proudly includes Jews by birth and by choice, non-Jews and interfaith couples from diverse ethnicities, backgrounds and ages.

Our temple home is a newly renovated 6,500 square foot LEED certified facility close to Pico/Robertson, which our membership actively helped to create throughout all phases of planning and design.

We are searching for an experienced, energetic and self-motivated Executive Director ready and able to be an integral member of our senior management team, and who will work closely with our clergy, staff, Executive Committee, lay leadership, and congregants. The Executive Director will support and advance our vision for an innovative, future-oriented LGBT and straight Jewish community based on values of inclusion and empathy, while building on our rich and storied past.

Our ideal candidate will be skilled at working collaboratively as well as being a decisive and bold leader. He/she will be focused on the fundamental business of the synagogue while maintaining the caring and warm atmosphere our community has built. Positive and frequent communication is central to the position, both in working with others and in overseeing the temple’s communications with members and the wider public. Conflict resolution and customer service experience are a plus. Must be able to maintain calm and prioritize in the midst of a busy office environment.

Major management focus includes fundraising, financial oversight, membership, ritual, and Jewish learning. The Executive Director will support these, as well as administration and operations as follows:

 Membership:
o Maintain good relationships with current members
o Help recruit and support new members working with lay leaders, appropriate committees and clergy
o Enhance BCC’s visibility in the wider GLBT and Jewish communities along with board, clergy and committees

Fundraising/Financial:
o Help oversee fundraising/development initiatives, including direct solicitation, in partnership with lay leaders, clergy and volunteer staff
o Participate in setting annual fundraising goals and programs during budget planning process
o Oversight of annual fundraising event
o Responsible for guiding and executing plans to achieve the established goals
o Work closely with Treasurer to monitor and maintain fiscal health and the annual budget
o Work with Executive Committee and Rabbi on annual appeals at High Holy Days

Administration/Operations
o Work closely with Treasurer and bookkeeper to send regular statements and oversee annual membership renewal process
o Manage office and support employees and contract staff, with appropriate Board oversight
o Regular staff evaluations as well as legal compliance regarding employment and safety
o Oversight of Facilities Management in conjunction with House Chair, staff, lay leaders and/or outside contractors including: building rental and usage, condition and maintenance, and other needs
o Manage and maintain BCC’s Events Calendar and scheduling in collaboration with BCC Executive Committee, clergy and office staff
o Facilitate senior staff and clergy meetings
o Develop, implement and/or supervise communications strategy through outlets including e-bulletin, newsletter, social media, and the BCC website, as well as press releases and other external communications
o Oversight of office infrastructure and technology systems
o Help develop and support temple programming, including special projects, recruit and manage volunteers, distribute tasks and generally guide, monitor and report on program results

Other duties as assigned and requested by the Board of Directors and clergy

Qualifications and Prerequisites:

 BA/BS degree; advanced degree preferred
 Related previous work experience; temple administration a plus
 Fundraising/development experience
 Experience with staff management and oversight
 Experience managing fundraising and other events
 Experience with PR and social media
 Experience with membership databases (especially Chaverware), Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc
 Facilities management a plus
 Sufficient knowledge of the Jewish and GLBT communities to work effectively
 Excellent written and verbal communication skills
 Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to interact effectively with congregants, Board, clergy and staff

Some evening and weekend hours required, as well as some Jewish Holidays.
