Celebrate the Jewish New Year- Drumming & Rhythm Workshop with the Tof Miriam (Frame Drum)
CELEBRATION OF THE JEWISH NEW YEAR!
Join Percussionist Marla Leigh for a drum and rhythm workshop using the tof Miriam. “Tof Miriam” is the Hebrew name for the frame drum. The frame drum is one of the oldest drums, dating back to as early as 1700 BCE. It was a drum that was traditionally played by women, and used for healing rituals. In the torah, it says that Miriam, the prophet, lead women in “song and timbrel” during the crossing of the Red Sea. The “timbrel” is another name for frame drum.
In this special workshop, we will connect to this ancient drumming practice as we celebrate the upcoming Jewish New Year.
The workshop will cover:
*Basic playing strokes for the Tof Miriam
*Traditional Middle Eastern Rhythms
* How to improvise and compose your own rhythms
* How to sing and drum with Hebrew songs in honor of Rosh Hashanah
* Fun group jams
*Gentle yoga stretches to prepare the body for drumming
Drums provided. All levels welcomed, beginners are encouraged.

I have taken lessons from Marla Leigh, and she is fantastic, as a drummer and teacher. If you’ve ever had any inclination for drumming, do it, you won’t be disappointed.
