June 2015 Film Club: “Gods and Monsters”
Saturday, June 20, BCC’s Film Club screens the 1998 movie, “Gods and Monsters” (Havdalah at 7pm, screening begins 7:30pm)
Set in 1957, James Whale (Ian McKellen), flamboyant director of Show Boat (1936), Frankenstein (1931), and The Bride of Frankenstein (1935), had long since stepped back from the glamor and glitz of Hollywood. A stroke triggers once buried flashes of memory of his life and career. Haunted and lonely, he recounts many of his experiences to his musclebound ex-marine gardener, Clay Boone (Brendan Fraser). Despite the divide that exists between them, their friendship develops. The director whose time has passed sees himself slipping away, unable to stop the decline, and indulges his fantasies through Boone. Starring: Brendan Fraser Ian McKellen, Lynn Redgrave and Lolita Davidovitch.
