Chinese by birth and Jewish by choice, Davi Cheng describes herself as a one-stop-shop of identities. Hear her story
Davi Cheng is the Los Angeles Regional Director Be’chol Lashon, an institute for Jewish and community research. Davi came to the U.S. from Hong Kong when she was 14 and she currently lives in Los Angeles. She often introduces herself by giving all of her names: Wai-Fong (Chinese), Mariana (English) and Davi (Hebrew).
Davi “embraced the covenant,” a term she prefers over “conversion,” 13 years ago after encountering the religion for the first time at the University of California at Berkeley in 1979. She has been with Jeannette Vance, or Bracha, for 30 years. In their Ketubah, or Jewish wedding contract, Bracha and Davi agreed to celebrate both Jewish and Chinese holidays and traditions in their household.
