Yom HaShoah commemorative activities Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust
Yom HaZikaron laShoah ve-laG’vurah (יום הזיכרון לשואה ולגבורה; “Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day”), known colloquially in Israel and abroad as Yom HaShoah (יום השואה) and in English as Holocaust Remembrance Day, or Holocaust Day, is observed as Israel’s day of commemoration for the approximately six million Jews and five million others who perished in the Holocaust as a result of the actions carried out by Nazi Germany and its accessories, and for the Jewish resistance in that period. In Israel, it is a national memorial day and public holiday. It was inaugurated on 1953, anchored by a law signed by the Prime Minister of Israel David Ben-Gurion and the President of Israel Yitzhak Ben-Zvi. It is held on the 27th of Nisan (April/May), unless the 27th would be adjacent to Shabbat, in which case the date is shifted by a day.
This year, Yom HaShoah takes place on Monday, April 8th, and the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust is having a special memorial day on Sunday, April 7th.
The full schedule:
10am-5pm: Museum Tours
Commemorative Artistic and Musical Performances; Survivor Speakers, and Children’s Art Activities.
11am: International Walk with Holocaust Survivors
Pan Pacific Park transforms into a historical timeline. Walk with survivors along a path of pre-arranged “Memory Markers” and learn first hand about the events commemorated.
2pm: Ceremony of Commemoration
Keynote speaker Ruth Kluger, Professor Emeritus of German at the University of California, Irvine and a Holocaust survivor. She is also the author of the bestsellerStill Alive: A Holocaust Girlhood Remembered about surviving childhood in multiple concentration camps.
Honorable dignitaries to inlcude the Israeli Consul General and Jewish Federation President Jay Sanderson. Featuring a special musical performance by Theodore Bikel.
This event is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required.
