The Golden Calf Incident: Highlights of this week’s Torah portion, Ki Tisa (Ex. 30:11-34:35)

This week on our popular Virtual Minyan:  Torah portion, Ki Tisa (Ex. 30:11-34:35) with the famous story of the Golden Calf, which nowadays is being translated as worshipping money. The people saw that Moses was late in coming down from the mountain.  They ganged up on Aaron and said: Get up! Make us a God that can go before us because Moses, the man, who took us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what happened to him. ….

And he took from their hand, fashioned it with a graving tool, and made it into a molten calf. Then they said: “This is your God, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt!” (Exodus 32:1,4)

The children of Israel had just witnessed God’s awesome power at Mount Sinai. And now they worship a Golden Calf. How could they?! Read it here.

Suggested Verses of the Week:

1.       “[The Sabbath] shall be a sign for all time between Me and the people of Israel.  For in six days Adonai made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day [God] ceased from work and was refreshed.” (Ex. 31:17)

2.      Upon finishing speaking with [Moses] on Mount Sinai, [God] gave Moses the two tablets of the Pact, stone tablets inscribed with the finger of God. (Ex. 31:18)

3.      As soon as Moses came near the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, he became enraged; and he hurled the tablets from his hands and shattered them at the foot of the mountain. (Ex. 32:19)
